Holocaust Pushback by African Americans. Do Jews or African Americans Get the Moral High Ground? Berman

Blacks and Jews: Alliances and Arguments, by Paul Berman (ed.) 1994. Delacorte Press, New York

Competitive Victimhood: This Time Between Jews and Blacks

This book consistently plays the victim card: Who was the greater victim. It is of relevance in understanding Holocaust self-importance not only in juxtaposition with the sufferings of African-Americans, but also in juxtaposition with the sufferings of all non-Jews.

VICTIMHOOD COMPETITION AND HOLOCAUST DOMINANCE: JEWS VS. BLACKS

Joe Wood, the editor of Malcolm X, depicts some typical statements from African-Americans, “I’m telling you. Holocaust got them psychotic. But I want to hear them talk about how many million of us died getting here. Six million’s only a drop in the ocean compared to what we went through. I want to know how many of us died on their slave ships. They never teach about THAT Holocaust.” (Emphasis added; pp. 113-114). That’s an excellent point about how the Jews’ Holocaust dominates American education.

SUFFERING COMPETITION IS REALLY A COMPETITION FOR THE MORAL HIGH GROUND

Joe Wood comments, “African Americans’ history of subjugation bestowed a moral authority historically reserved for Jews by Jews in Christian Europe.” (Emphasis in original, p. 107).

A MERITOCRACY OF SUFFERING: HOLOCAUST SUPREMACY DOES CREATE A ZERO SUM GAME

Philosophy professor Laurence Thomas writes, “…I observed that there are two ways of understanding the claim that X is the ultimate evil: 1) No evil can be more horrible than X; 2) All other evils are less horrible than X. Far too often, in talking about the difference between the Holocaust and American slavery, people have said the first, but in their heart of hearts have mean the second.” (pp. 301-302).

That’s just it! If the Holocaust is the greatest crime in history, and worthy of more attention than all other genocides, it can only mean that other genocidal crimes were not as great as the Holocaust, and are less worthy of attention. It is no more complicated than that.

THE SUFFERING OLYMPICS: THIS TIME BETWEEN JEWS AND AFRICAN-AMERICANS. NO HOLOCAUST UNIQUENESS

History professor Clayborn Carson comments, “Indeed, African Americans and Jews often react angrily to suggestions that their oppression is not unique. For example, during a 1979 visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum, Jesse Jackson once incurred the wrath of many Jews when he used the phrase ‘one of the great human tragedies of all times’ instead of ‘unique’ to describe what he had seen commemorated. African-Americans are similarly disturbed by any equation of their oppression in the United States with that of Jewish Americans.” (p. 1345).
