NSZ Intelligence Gathering, Sabotage, and Guerrilla Warfare. Soviet Enmity Appreciated

NOTEBOOKS CONCERNING THE HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL ARMED FORCES is the title of this unpublished Polish-language typewritten notebook. It is the first of a series of notebooks written by NSZ veterans, in Chicago, in the early 1960’s. This copy of the notebook was once owned by George Jerzy Gnat, whom I had known from childhood, and with whom I had many discussions. Much of this notebook centers on personalities, and highlights the NSZ promotion of the Oder-Neisse (Odra-Nysa) as Poland’s western frontier.

POGROMS AND SOVIET PROPAGANDA

Tadeusz Boguszewski calls attention to accusations of the NSZ conducting pogroms on Jews in the Kielce area. This propaganda comes straight from Moscow (p. 8). It has since found its way into innumerable Jewish publications. For more on the NSZ and the Jews, see:

THE MIECZ I PLUG

This organization is controversial. The editors suggest that it was founded by the Gestapo, and that some of the best Polish patriots, unaware of its origins and purpose, joined it, upon which the Gestapo murdered some of them. (p. 23). The NSZ counterintelligence killed some of the ringleaders of the Miecz i Plug.

POLISH GUERRILLA INTELLIGENCE AND SABOTAGE

The NSZ attached a time bomb to a German submarine in the waters off Gdansk (Danzig) and sunk it. At about the same location, the NSZ set fire to a ship with German officers at a banquet, killing some of them. (Jozef Nowicki, p. 32).

Evidently referring to the V-rocket factory at Peenemunde, the NSZ claims credit for passing on the intelligence information about the location of this well-disguised German factory to the A. K. (p. 32). Two months later, in the summer of 1943, the RAF destroyed it. The NSZ also found the locations where the test-fired V-2 rockets fell, and made detailed technical drawings of them in order to be delivered to the Allies. (p. 32).

POLISH GUERRILLA ACTION

For a long time, the NSZ was active in the robbery, purchase, and accumulation of German weaponry. (Captain Zapora, p. 50). In the spring of 1943, one NSZ battalion liquidated some Gestapo confidantes and one member of the Blue Police. (p. 50). A total of 65 Germans, confidantes, and provocateurs were eliminated. (p. 51).

There were repeated armed skirmishes between the NSZ guerrillas and the Germans, leading to casualties among both. (p. 51).

According to Major Kozlowski, some 2,000 NSZ guerrillas took part in the Soviet-betrayed Warsaw Uprising. (p. 55).

THE SOVIET UNION IS POLAND’S NEW MAIN ENEMY

Tadeusz Boguszewski wrote that, by late 1943, it was concluded that it was only a matter of time before Nazi Germany was defeated. So the USSR was now Poland’s Enemy No. 1. It may well be that the Soviet Union is the ally of Poland’s allies, but in no sense is the Soviet Union Poland’s ally. The disarming (and frequent murder) of the Home Army soldiers fighting in Operation Tempest (Burza) against the Germans, by the Soviets at Wilno (Vilnius), Polesie, and Wolyn, is further proof that the Soviet Union is an enemy. (p. 37).

The NSZ vowed, to the extent it was possible, to fight against the depredations of the Red Army against the Polish civilian population. (p. 38). Major Kozlowski described an NSZ attack against a Red Army unit that had engaged in rape, drunken revelry, robberies and confiscations, and murder of Poles. (p. 56).
