Rising ’44: The Battle of Warsaw, by Norman Davies. 2003. Penguin Books, New York

Warsaw Uprising Encyclopedia. Events Leading Up to and Including the Warsaw Uprising, and the Soviet-Subjugation Aftermath

This book provides a comprehensive account of not only the Warsaw rising, but also Poland under German occupation, and of Polish guerrilla warfare in general. I focus on a few issues.

THE FEBRUARY 1944 ASSASSINATION OF TOP NAZI FRANZ KUTSCHERA BY THE ARMIA KRAJOWA

This is how historian Norman Davies assesses this operation, “In terms of planning and daring, the assassination of Franz Kutschera was undoubtedly in the same league as the better-known killing of Reinhard Heydrich in Prague eighteen months earlier…At Lidice, after Heydrich’s death, they shot 198 men. In Warsaw, after Kutschera’s death, they shot 300.” (pp. 197-198).

One of the unappreciated aspects of the Warsaw Uprising, elaborated by Davies, involves the acquisition of weapons. He writes, “During the battle in Warsaw and its surrounding, the insurgents captured a great deal–4 tanks, 2 armored vehicles, 1 75mm field gun, 12 mine throwers, 4 light anti-tank guns, over 200 Panzerfausts [anti-tank weapons], 16 heavy machine guns, 86 assault rifles, 155 sub-machine guns, 596 repeater rifles and ammunition for particular weapons, but of a limited nature. The insurgents supplemented their weapons with homemade ones and from drops. In the City Center 36 tonnes were collected, 16 tons from an American drop–mostly anti-tank weapons, sub-machine guns, somewhat heavy weapons.” (p. 420).

THE ENEMY RECOGNIZES THE EFFICACY OF POLISH GUERRILLA WARFARE

Davies writes, “The most unexpected compliment eventually emerged from the unlikeliest of sources. At the end of the War, when the Third Reich was facing defeat and occupation, the Nazi leaders turned to the head of German army intelligence in the east, Reinhard Gehlen, and asked him in desperation to advise on how to form a German Resistance movement against the Allies. Gehlen, who was not a Nazi, advised that they follow the model of the Polish Home Army.” (p. 201).

The author comments, “For five weeks, from late August to early October, Rokossovsky’s First Byelorussian Front was close enough to Warsaw not only to render intensive assistance but also, if orders had been given, to effect a rescue.” (p. 626).

Historian Davies has a way with words. He describes the Soviet betrayal of the Warsaw Uprising as follows, “The capitulation of Warsaw was a vast and terrible event performed in a surreal setting. mIn the western half of the city, largely ruined, a residual community of half a million people were being forced to surrender themselves to Nazi captivity, while in the eastern half, the largest army in the world pretended not to be there…New Yorkers might grasp the enormity of the scene if told that Manhattan was being emptied by the Nazis of its entire population, while the Soviet Army stood watching from the other end of a derelict Brooklyn Bridge. Londoners would have grasped what was happening if told that everyone was being systematically deported from districts north of the Thames, while cross the river in Battersea, Lambeth, and Southwark nothing moved, no one intervened. No shot was fired; no help was offered; no word of sympathy was expressed.” (p. 435).

THE FARCICAL TRIAL OF THE SIXTEEN (PROCESS SZESNASTU)

Davies has strong words about this kangaroo court. He comments, “The Trial of the Sixteen, which took place in Moscow between 18 and 21 June 1945, was a key event in revealing the direction in which Soviet policy was moving. It confirmed both the incorrigible bad faith of the Communists and their determination to crush all political opponents. An archetypical show trial, replete with absurd accusations, brainwashed defendants, and suborned witnesses, it had nothing to do with real offences. It was staged to show that the Soviets were all-powerful, that ‘Soviet justice’ could perpetrate the most blatant injustices with impunity, and that the Western powers were impotent to prevent it.” (p. 466).

KL WARSCHAU, COMPLETE WITH GAS CHAMBERS FOR POLES

There is controversy about the scale of death at KL Warschau, and whether or not there were gas chambers located there. Certain Jewish groups, evidently attempting to maintain a mystique of the gassing of only Jews (false in any case), have exhibited a deathly fear that there may have been gas chambers at KL Warschau, and have done their best to silence and discredit it. For this reason alone, I am “skeptical of the skeptics”, and, in that spirit, write the following:

Norman Davies writes, “For reasons connected with its post-war-fate, KZ Warschau has all but disappeared from the history books, but its grisly existence was real enough, and it features in the documentation of the Nuremberg Tribunal. Created by a series of personal directives of Himmler, it operated from October 1942 to August 1944. It consisted of a complex of five sub-camps, which were linked by a series of purpose-built railway lines. One subcamp, in the western suburbs, had originally served in 1939 as a transit center for POWs, two, on Goose and Bonifrater Streets, were located on the territory of the Ghetto; and two more were built in the immediate vicinity of Warsaw’s Western Station. In all, the complex contained 119 barracks and space for 41,000 inmates. A series of gas chambers was constructed in a tunnel linking the two areas next to the Western Station, and three crematoria continued to function on the ‘Goose Farm’ site, right up to August 1944.” (pp. 91-92).

Davies continues, “Attempts to ascertain the numbers and provenance of the people who died in KZ Warschau have been surrounded with unanswered questions. One estimate puts the total at 200,000, and relates the figure to the constant round-ups, executions, and collective punishments perpetrated by the SS in Warsaw itself. Some commentators have linked it to the long-standing ‘Pabst plan’ of 1940, which aimed to reduce the city’s population to half a million.” (p. 92). A number of eyewitnesses, quoted by Davies (p. 92), reported the mass gassings at KL Warschau.

NAZI GERMANS GASSED POLES–NO MATTER WHAT

Recently, some Jews have raised a big hullabaloo about Poles allegedly not actually getting gassed at KL Warschau. In the end, it does not matter whether or not KL Warschau engaged in the gassing of Poles.  The Nazis undoubtedly gassed Poles in most if not all of the so-called extermination camps, as well as in many “ordinary” concentration camps. MONUMENT TEAR-DOWNS: LEFTIST THOUGHT CONTROL: MARXISTS AND THEIR NEO-MARXIST SUCCESSORS DECIDE WHO CAN BE REMEMBERED

The following is timely in the light of the latter-2020 neo-Marxist war on statues of Christopher Columbus and other important figures in American history. Davies writes, “Historical monuments, and the manipulation thereof, were a Communist specialty…all inconvenient traces of the former times were scrupulously removed…The main Censorship Office kept a register of names that could be praised, names that could be mentioned for the purposes of condemnation, and names that could not be mentioned even to be condemned.” (p. 593).
